Always Learning

Learning & Development For All

At Synchrony, we’re always looking to learn, grow and evolve so we can keep pursuing the innovative ideas that drive our business—and our people—forward. Our employees create meaningful careers by working on interesting projects that improve the customer experience and help them grow alongside our business and partners. Our flexible training and development programs are purposefully co-designed with employees to deliver growth when, where and how they prefer. Here are some Learning & Development (L&D) highlights and how they’re making a difference in employees’ lives:

Higher Education For All

Our employees told us the high cost of higher education can stand between them and their dreams. That’s why we offer up to $20,000 per year in tuition reimbursement and partner with Bright Horizons EdAssist to offer debt-free tuition at participating schools. We’ll also cover up to $9,000 per year for skills-based certifications in high-growth fields like cybersecurity, software engineering and data science.

Thanks to these programs, Andreas Neumeister , AVP Product Owner, earned his bachelor’s degree, became a certified Scrum Master and was able to purchase his first home.

Hands-On Tech Training

As more jobs require technological know-how, we’re aligning our L&D opportunities to equip our people with the skills they’ll need to succeed. Our Technology Apprenticeship Program offers employees in non-tech roles a 12-month rotation in different technology tracks, with the goal of opening the door to more career opportunities. Our Veterans Leadership Program is a 13-month experience that sets up veterans for success as they transition to civilian careers through training and hands-on experiences in cybersecurity and data analytics.

Brittany Weisbeck, who used the Technology Apprenticeship to train in Artificial Intelligence says, “Having this opportunity outside of a formal education is life-changing.” Brittany is now an Operational Resilience Data Analyst.

Leadership Training at Every Level

From interns to associates to senior leaders, we’re dedicated to providing leadership training at every career level. For early career growth we have our Business Leadership Program. Our Skills Training for Evolving Professionals (STEP), Empowered, and Mosaic Leadership Institute focus on advancing associate to mid-level employees to their highest leadership potential. For VP-level employees and higher, we offer our Synchrony Leadership Development Experience (SLDE) and Impact Sessions, which provide tools for empowering those around them, centered on our Synchrony values.

CC Cabantog-Cirineo, VP, Global Talent Development, said that SLDE, “reinforced my belief in the practice of continuous learning. After all, ‘the best leaders are the best learners.’”

Learn When, Where and How You Prefer

We understand that everyone has different needs when it comes to learning. That’s why we partner with various organizations that accommodate any learning style and offer on-demand learning that fits any schedule. In 2023, our employees completed nearly 650,000 L&D courses—that’s an average of 25 hours of learning per person!

“We have lots of learning opportunities, be it self-learning, online learning or instructor led learning,” says Smile Rajkumari, Risk Testing Lead, “And I used these opportunities to learn things like Tableau and SAS.”

We’re also focused on providing inclusive learning for neurodiverse employees. Partnerships with the University of Connecticut and the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign equip our leaders with tools to support neurodivergent employees and pair first- and second-year autistic college students with Synchrony mentors for six-week internships.

Josh Crafford, VP, Technology Learning & Development, says, “building an inclusive culture of support and accommodations can help not just neurodivergent employees, but all employees.”

Not only is investing in our employees the right thing to do, it’s also a strategic imperative. Empowering our people to take charge of their careers ensures that they can continue to innovate and achieve great outcomes for our partners, customers, community and business.
